Mebrahtom “Meb” Keflezighi
In August 2004, Meb Keflezighi won the Olympic silver medal in Athens, the first American since 1976 (when Frank Shorter won the silver) to win a medal in the men’s marathon. Last November, by placing second in the New York City Marathon, Meb demonstrated that Athens was not simply a stroke of luck. Meb is one of the top distance runners in the US, holding numerous national championships and records in the 10,000m and 15 km races.

Born in Asmara, Eritrea, Meb immigrated to the United States, as a refugee with his parents, during the country 30-year war of independence from Ethiopia. A graduate of UCLA, Meb is recognized for enormous running achievements, and is an inspiring role model for all new Americans.
